Smith's Situation: THE FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH

Some weeks are entertaining, some are educational, some are spent traveling, but this week was one of inspiration.......just plain sweet, in so many ways! President and Sister Mehr, our West Indies mission President and his wife, came and spent most of the week with us on our island paradise of Grenada. How lucky can we be? We feel so blessed!
President Mehr has often stressed to us the importance of fasting, and since this is Fast Sunday, we will share a few thoughts on the beautiful principle of the fast.

Fasting, with prayer as its companion, is a form of true worship of our Heavenly Father. By fasting, we place our body in subjection to the spirit which develops a closeness and unity with the Holy Ghost. Fasting gives us spiritual strength and power.

We may wonder why blessings seem to be withheld from us.

Many of our desired blessings are never realized because we do not faithfully obey the law of fasting and prayer.

President Howard W. Hunter said "To discipline ourselves through fasting brings us in tune with God, and fast day provides an occasion to set aside the temporal so that we might enjoy the higher qualities of the spiritual."

If we faithfully observe this law of the fast, we would be tremendously blessed as a church. Heavenly Father wouldn't withhold His special blessing from us, if we are obedient.

Our world is presently in a state of turmoil and darkness. We all need the sustaining powers of God, which we can obtain through fasting, prayer and the humbling of our souls.

May we be willing to give our lives over to God, to be obedient to the beautiful principle of the fast. May we pray for the understanding we need to help us observe this law. Heavenly Father loves us and denies none....all are alike unto God. All He asks is that we keep His commandments. He invites all of us to partake of His goodness.
